Mermaid Hair – Don’t Care

Embracing a winter break in Plett doesn’t mean retreating indoors to sink beneath the duvet. Instead it means throwing open the curtains at dawn to find the sky painted an irresistible peach and gold as the sun rises from behind the Tsitsikamma Mountains. The morning air holds a crisp bite that immediately wakes the senses, while the ocean whispers its eternal invitation: come out and play. This is Plett at its most wild and magnificent, setting the perfect stage for the highly anticipated fifth annual Plett Ocean Festival, running from 3 to 12 July 2026.

For true-blue ocean lovers, the festival is the ultimate winter playground: pairing family fun and curiosity with coastal adventure, marine excursions and heart-led conservation. With a multi-layered itinerary that promises to be as immersive and thrilling as a winter plunge, it’s a map of coastal discovery, allowing you to curate an ocean experience tailored to your unique spirit.

Shift to Shore

The weekend starts off the only way that makes sense: a marine safari to view whales, dolphins, seals, birds and more. It’s Whale Season and the migrating leviathans may just put on one of their world-famous aerial displays. The sun is shining and a salty breeze fills your senses, the vast, blue bay stretches out before you offering endless discoveries. It seems unfair, there’s magic in this winter air. If you’re more of a landlubber, there are delightful spots from which to spot whales and dolphins.

Then it’s down to the shoreline to explore the rock pools. They’re not really rock pools, they are miniature universes operating under their own laws of survival. Watch closely for a sly octopus, a delicate anemone or a predatory starfish, and you realize the entire cosmos is spinning in a square metre of salt water. The vibrant soft corals of Southern Cape coastline recently graced the cover of Time magazine. Keurboomstrand, Singing Kettle and Nature’s Valley will provide endless intertidal delights.

Conservation Conversations

At the center of this milestone year is the Plett Marine Science Symposium, taking place from 10 to 12 July 2026 at the iconic Beacon Island Resort. Proudly supported by the Tavcor Motor Group, this three-day anchor event brings science out from behind closed academic doors and transforms it into a vibrant public conversation. Once again, the incomparable Zandile Ndhlovu, globally celebrated as “Zandi the Mermaid,” returns as Master of Ceremonies, bridging the gap between high-level global biodiversity targets and grassroots community storytelling. On the speaker lineup are the remarkable winners of the Cape2Rio Yacht Race, the Alexforbes Angel Wings crew, ready to share the raw grit, isolation, and humbling glory of navigating the open Atlantic. Make time to spend with passionate marine biologists unpacking the secret lives of Cape clawless otters, the elusive Knysna seahorse and underwater marine canyons. Do not mistake this for a dry, sterile academic gathering of white coats and bar graphs. This is a front-line briefing by the marine community’s best and brightest.

The Heart of South Africa’s Ocean Culture

Back to the shore again. This time, to embrace the infectious, kinetic energy of the local surf tribe at Winter Surf Fest. It’s all about the waves, beach culture, family fun and fierce competition in some of South Africa’s most exciting winter conditions. Join the action and settle on the sand long enough – kissed by flying salt spray – and you’re no longer a spectator, no longer a visitor – you are part of the stoke. It’s an electric atmosphere, both in and out of the water.

Staying with watersports, why not take a peek below the surface on a snorkel or scuba dive or a paddle across it? Finish off with a guided Robberg hike with a knowledgeable Plett Shark Spotter, build a sandcastle or search for a pansy shell, settle into an evening around the fire and a spicy fish curry? Visit a market for ocean-inspired trinkets or simply curl up in an ocean-side cafe with a copy of Moby Dick. Take a deep sea-scented breath, settle into your own ocean rhythm and let time and tide enfold you in your own Plett Ocean Festival feeling.  What will your Plett Ocean Festival look like this year?

Observe. Conserve. Preserve.
